Local Sailor trains with World Champion
by Monsoon Cup
PULAU DUYONG (20 November 2011): Mohd
Saifullah Mohd Esa has been given a unique opportunity as he has been
recruited by Ian Williams for practice sessions as the world sailing
champion prepares for the Monsoon Cup, which takes place from 22nd to 27th November at Ri-Yaz Heritage Marina Resort and Spa, Kuala Terengganu.
With one
crew-member arriving late, Williams can’t afford to wait and wants to
get in as much practice as possible. Mohd Saifullah has chalked up
experience as a bowman, racing on Tiffany Koo’s team during the
Malaysian Match Racing Championship (MMRC) last year and knows how it
feels to sail with the front-runners.
But being on
board a world champion’s boat is something else. What more, on the boat
of the current No.1 on the World Match Racing Tour leaderboard. With 106
points, Williams and his team, Team GAC Pindar, are potentially one
event away from being crowned champions.
In 2010,
Williams’ confidence in the potential of our local sailors led him to
look at the possibility of signing a major sponsorship deal with a large
Malaysian bank. He said, “The first way to help local sailors move
forward would be to have them join my team for a training session. The
second way would be for me to enter an event with the Malaysians crewing
for me.”
Williams took
the opportunity to impart his knowledge and experience to the Malaysian
sailors. He said, “I wanted to try to test each candidate on a number of
areas, in particular; strength and fitness, ability to learn,
awareness, reaction to pressure, and natural affinity for the sport.” In
terms of pure sailing ability, three candidates stood out, one of them
being Mohd Saifullah. Williams explained, “I thought that Saifullah was
probably the most accomplished sailor in his role and that’s the reason
why we picked him to train with us.”
The Monsoon Cup
has not only elevated the sport of sailing in Malaysia but also
provided a means to get more children to take up sailing. The event has
also opened the doors to corporate sponsorship as it offers sponsors
great benefits in terms of exposure and corporate social responsibility
(CSR) initiatives. Leading Malaysian corporations are always looking out
for sponsorship opportunities such as these that are not only
advantageous to the company but also benefit society as a whole.
Cayalah ok Lah......Ciao.
